Has Waxing Helped My Dark Armpits?

Hello Divas!

I am now a few months into the waxing underarm hair in an effort to lighten my dark armpits. I have been waxing every time the hair grows and have not used a razor or depilatory cream since last year.

You might remember my adventures in dealing with a dark underam area as listed below:

How To Lighten Dark Underarms

Update on How To Lighten Dark Underarms

Revisiting My Dark Side

Armpit Whitening Update

F*$#@% Up My Armpits

Those were just a few of my adventures in trying to get my armpits to look like the rest of my skin and not a nasty patch of black, rough troll skin.

Now here is a pic of my left armpit on March 1st.....need to wax again, hee hee.

I finally got a digital camera so I can take better pictures instead of using the ones from the phone. So here is the left armpit taken about one year ago. I know it is hard to compare the two since one is a clearer image but that is all I have right now.

I do notice that when I wax some skin flakes (I guess) come off and I can see little dark patches on the wax strip. I guess this is the exfoliating part they talk about that will help with lightening the skin.

What I CAN tell you is that Lemon juice does NOT work. It burned and did not have any lightening effect.

This is so disgusting and not very Diva like at all.

I am now using a lightening cream with 3% Hydroquinone called Nadinola. I really hope this works because it is my last resort.

As always I will keep you guys in the loop. Has anyone had success with anything they have used?

oh gosh, i don't wax all the time. what i do is after i wax them pits,i just use a tweezer to get rid of strays every other day. i probably don't need to wax every so often.

maybe you could try to do the same? because all that tugging from waxing may also be causing the skin to darken, i'm not sure. but my pits definitely look better than when i was shaving.hehehe

this is just my 2 cents. ;)

Thanks for your comment. I am not good at tweezing.....I seem to break off more hairs than what I pull out.

I am giving this whitening cream a chance to work because I really don't know what else to do.

Hi there! I came across your blog, while looking for armpit bleaching pictures.

I'm 33, pale (Irish) complexion and I have the very same thing you do. I wanted to tell you waxing isn't going to make this go away - it's not caused by shaving.

I was trying to bleach my underarms with a mix of baking soda, lemon juice, and peroxide, but it wasn't working (I've had this since I was about 11?).

I got tired of fighting it and went to a dermatologist to have him take a look. Well, it's a condition called called Acanthosis Nigricans, and it's related to problems with obesity, skin chafing, and/or diabetes. It just so happens I'm a type 2 diabetic.

Here's a little more about the condition:
http://www.aocd.org/skin/dermatologic_diseases/acanthosis_nigrica.html

Once I got my blood glucose straightened out, my armpits have faded from a very dark dingy gray-black color to an a orangy brown-gold color under my arms, but it is still there. My doctor told me it would fade, but I have no idea if it will ever go away entirely. I'd be more than happy to trade pictures privately, if you'd like.

I've been considering trying a hydroquinone bleaching cream like Esoterica to see if it will lighten it any futher. I wondered if you had tried this? I've also considered laser skin resurfacing, but gosh the cost.

At any rate, thank you so much for posting this topic on your blog. It's a very frustrating problem to deal with alone.

Don't use roll on deodorants is what I heard to avoid dark armpits. Also wipe off with wet wipes or baby wipes before bed would help, or rub them off with your hands to get the deodorants from sticking. My underarm is lighter now.

I just started two weeks ago in lightening my underarm. I would say that I made some progress. They are definitely much lighter.

This is what I've done:
1. I use a tweezer to pull off all the hairs (I used to just shave my underarm).
2. When showering in the morning, I apply a BHA cleanser (Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Wash Cream Cleanser) and exfoliate using a pumice stone (gentle circular motion).
3. I rub some lemon slice and wait for 15 minutes before washing it off.
4. Moisturize with AHA (Lac-Hydrin Five) in the morning prior to applying deodorant (Secret).
5. Wash my underarm at night using wet towellete and finish off with Nadinola Fade Cream at night.

I've shown my results to my family and they definitely agree my underarms are lighter. I know that my steps are quite lengthy but they are effective and not that expensive either.

Hello, i was looking for waxing armpit tips and came across your blog. if it is an exfoliation prob. i would try REALLY fine, exfoliating scrubs. i guess the bigger granuals don't work as well, and can cause block-ups. my friend who works at ulta gave me a bottle of, Peter Thomas Roth - Anti-Aging Buffing Beads For Face and Body. Before my first time waxing today, i still had deoderant under my arms so i used rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball, and noticed it got off the deodorant flakes, plus the cotton ball was a little tan/dirty. i dont know if that is from tanning bronzers i have used in the past, but thought, hmm. mayb thats why they are darker. I am trying to wax because by the end of the day it looks like i have a five o'clock shadow, under there :) Good luck with everything. Uggh what we go through!

hi i'm so glad to have found this blog. I too have dark underarms i'm trying dermadoctors no nonsense brightening roll on. Erm i've been using it for 5 months and to be honest i dont know abt it. It does cost quite alot and i dont see it doing much. It seems to get a little light but then just goes back to dark again. I have seen a small very small improvement however so i will keep using it to see if it gets any better. Fingers crossed. Tried waxing and stuff too, doesnt really do much justice either! Oh god somebody help lol ergh

U need to give prescription lightning creams a try.

My skin was much darker and rougher than yours, but after just 3 weeks of applying the cream, my armpits went back to they natural colour.

I use a cream called "Skin-Lite" which contains "Hydroquinone, Tretinoin and Mometasone Furoate Cream". If you can't find this cream in your area, you can try any other cream with similar properties.

Give it a try.....

Hello, how are your armpits doing? Wow, imagine that for a pick up line!

I have dark armpits too and I think I can trace it back on the senior years of highschool-- I shaved, I would apply roll-on and would sweat a lot.

I only had the courage to have it waxed 4 years ago and I'd say it became 80% lighter on that first time. I remember you could barely see the hairs, but when she pulled that wax off, it was crazy!! It was like she was holding a patch of grass! Because I had been shaving carelessly for too long, the roots were incredibly deep and also had ingrowns. Since then I would wax every few weeks and occasionally shave on "emergencies".. meaning, I got lazy and didn't really take care of it.

This year I haven't shaved and have been tweezing. I started waxing again last month. When I shower, I use the for-sensitive-skin face exfoliant under there about 3-4 times a week. It's the kind with the beads to exfoliate it because I always forget to buy a pumice stone. And ever since, my armpit has opened up the ingrowns which allows me to either tweeze or wax, and so gradually becoming softer. As for lightening it, it's not the whitest, but I think it has definitely improved.

I read on one of your posts that you wax every 3 days? Did anyone tell you that you are to let the hairs grow out about a week or two? When I would go to the salon, they said they only wax a particular area a maximum of 3 times so as not to irritate or "overwork" the skin. You know you've done too much in that spot if the skin has turned red!

I also read that you use deodorant the next morning. Whenver I had my pits waxed by professionals (I tried a few places, but I do it myself now), they always always always tell me not to soap or apply deodorant straight away for at least another 24 hours: "let the pores close up" and "let the skin rest". It stung when I accidentally applied deodorant straightaway.

I sometimes wax after a hot shower because my armpits are clean and the pores are a bit open. And lastly, I'd also like to recommend hard wax instead of the ones you have to use with strips. I find it much easier to use.

Anonymous said...

your pits do look a LOT better even though some darkness is still there!! :)

be careful about using that cream though...ive heard any of those having more than 2% hydroquinone in them can cause cancer =\

in my kit theres also a shower gel which keeps the skin that nice colour once you've got the desired look with the bleach cream.
a small bottle of booster lotion which if clear liquid u apply in the morning on the area to speed up the process.
and a moisturiser which u use when u have the desired skin colour to keep it that way.

Hello guys.. I'm back. I posted last Sept. 21st about trying divine derriere. I've been using this product for 3 weeks but no result. I think it just make my underarm darker. When I applied it to my skin it was stinging or has that burning sensation..it hurts! Once again I wasted money. Can anybody tell me what other stuff there that works?

Anonymous said...

I have this problem too! I've had success with OLAY Generist "Microdermabraison Treatment". I got mine at the local grocery store. It really works. It helps break down that thick skin and it really lightens. After the first treatment I noticed a huge difference. Now I'm at the end of the bottle and what a difference. My underarms are so much lighter and the skin is so soft. Try it and see for yourself. I'm sold!

I've recently started a regime of:
Washing with black soap
Epilating
Rubbing the area with rubbing alcohol every morning and night
Palmer's Fade cream with kojic acid

I've seen slight results so far

I tried the divine derriere cream. At first, I didn't notice any difference after one week so I contacted them and they said that I should try to make my skin exfoliate faster. They said that I should scrub my arm pits when I take a shower and drink enough water every day to keep my body and skin hydrated. They also said that I should use a moisturiser during the day and use the divine derriere cream at night. After doing what they said for a week, I am now seeing a noticible change in my arm pits and I would say that they are about 80 percent lightened with only 20 percent more to go before they look perfect. Way to go divine derriere. Thank you for offering this great working product. I love you guys.

Hi, I have the same problem as well and I can tell ya it's not caused by shaving... and waxing won't solve the problem either. It looks like Acanthosis Nigricans. I have the same problem. I'd suggest going to a dermatologist, just to make sure that that's what it is. Best of luck!

Esmeralda said...

In reply to the person asking about whether we shave/wax while using Divine Derriere: I shave but VERY gently. The customer service at Divine Derriere explained to me that the dark skin in my armpits is caused by the skin rubbing together when I move my arms. The rubbing is called "skin trauma" and it's kind of like sandpaper scratching your skin every day and the skin never has a chance to heal. They said that the same reason is why people have a dark anal area- because of the skin rubbing together when you walk. Your skin tries to heal itself in reply to this "skin trauma" injury, and your skin makes more melanin to try to heal itself. That's why we have dark armpits. So of course if you have stubble from shaving your armpits, then this stubble can really cause some skin trauma because it scratches the skin a lot. Of course shaving with a blade scratches your skin too, so that's why you have to shave very gently. Or you can wax, but the wax can rip off the top layer of your skin, and that would be skin trauma too. They actually said that I should use an electric shaver to shave my armpits because it won't scratch my skin at all, but I don't have one. I've been following Divine Derriere's instructions for a week now and I am delighted and astonished at the way my armpits look. I just shave very gently every day, apply the divine derriere at night, and apply a moisturizer to my armpits during the day. They also said that if you use deodorant during the day, you should wash all the divine derriere off your skin first, because the aluminum in the deodorant can react with divine derriere and you can get oxidation, which is the same thing as rust, so your skin can turn orangeish. So just wash your armpits before applying deororant and you will be fine. This is the only product that has gotten rid of my dark skin. I think my skin is maybe 50% lighter after one week using Divine Derriere, and I am in love with it :D

Have to say that DIVINE DERRIERE is amazing, thank god i found out about it. my armpits are alot lighter and very happy can wear sleeveless dresses and tops....

I suffered with this problem and have the solution. 1.Have your undearms lasered.2.Apply a mild glycolic acid after cleansing and shaving.3.Cleanse and shave only at night.4. Never scrub your underarms.5.Apply a skin protectant ointment(vaseline) before applying deodorant.6.Use Dove brand deodorants only. Things to know:Lasering will permantely remove 70-100% of the coarse hair and reduce shaving or eliminate shaving all together. Less shaving means less irritations. Applying vaseline to the skin before applying your deodorant will protect the skin from irritations and keep it protected and moisturized. Using glycolic acid at nite will keep the skin exfoliated, cleaner and smoother. Never scrub this area in order to avoid shadowing and dark spots. Use a hydroquenone cream to boost the process and lighten the area and u will have more beautiful underarms! This problem will gradually return if you dont do this at least 3 times a week!Enjoy!

Hello everyone :) I'm 15, and I don't have such a drastic problem, but my underams are slightly darker, and my parents won't let my get wax strips, so I have to shave, and the hairs are getting harder to remove, and sometimes the tips of the hair can be seen even after a long time shaving :/ are there any home-tips I could have, so my underarms would be smoother and lighter? Thanks so much, Juliet <3 Xx

I bought divine derriere and been using it for 4 night now. I applied it on my underarm since mine wasnt that white and clear. But I think I did something wrong because my armpit turned red and itchy. After reading all your comments about divine derriere, I think i knew what i did wrong. I shaved my armpit before applying the cream. and i guess it got irritated. But maybe if i just leave my armpit free from divine derriere for a day or two I'll redo the procedure and hopefully get the result I wanted. I'll keep you guys posted :)

Hey ladies, I have the same problems as you. I started using Dr. Summit Skin Whitenter cream on my armpits and have notice a slight improvement/lightness. Will update you if things change.

hi ladies, I'm back to tell u the result i got so far with divine derriere. So Ive started it a month ago and I admit I skipped sometimes to rest my armpits. Anyways, my armpit got lighter a bit. Yet, i have not gotten the result i wanted. I am still using the cream and will wait until, who knows when, it will completely lighten my skin.

Hi Diva in Training: I have been following you/this blog for years; and I too have hyperpigmentation and dark underarms. I saw two dermatologist which were no help, the only good advice I got from them was not to wax only to use the electric razor. A few weeks ago, I read that someone on this blog had been using the Divine Derriere bleaching cream. I took the plunge and I bought it, and I'm happy to report that my underarms, and acne scars have improved. I think it has worked much better than the super expensive ($150+)bleaching creams my dermatologist prescribed. I'm trying to be cautions though and only using a little bit at a time. I really wish you the best and thank you for being so open and post your photos for us.

Hi everyone, I'm wandering why I didn't get the results like many of you who have tried divine derriere. It did not work for me. I do admit, I skipped a few days however even when I was trying to be consistent my underarms still seemed to stay the same. Since than I have resorted to laser hair removal, and let me just tell you... Its worth it! I no longer shave (just once per month or longer) and I am only on the 6th treatment (theres 8 in total) so hopefully I may not ever shave at all. This has helped my underarms become lighter but I'm still waiting to see better results when I'm finished. I was just curious though, for those with good results what kind of deodorants do you guys use to maintain it being white? I know its better to have alum-free but I was wandering what brand to try. LUSH? TOMS?- THANKS :)

Hi Diva's

Thank u for all the comments posted. I have to admit, I have not read all of them. But I kind of got the general idea. I have darl underarms. I have had them from childhood. I kind of stoped trying stuff, cos their so dark, whats gonna work. Anyway, two weeks ago I went to a Derm and had an ultimate peel done. It was suppose to Gradually peel the dark layer off. Its the third Monday, and the marks have gotten darker and a larger area is dark now. Hydroquinone kind of irritated it. It got red and is now darker. Now the derm gave me another mixture of Hydroquinone. I have no choice but to use it. Its so deppressing, I doubt its gonna work. I guess the most ironic part is that as soon as I decided to do something about the dark marks. It got just got worse.

Its hard being a DIVA.. for some of us at least

I guess I will have to try out this Divine Derriere that everyone keeps talking about.

I just know that what the dermatologist suggested is NOT working and I am tired of wasting my money for office visits and then buying prescriptions and it is not working.

I follow the directions just like they tell me and the things don't work and the dermatologist looks at me like I am lying and not doing it correctly.

Divine Derriere for almost 2mos- aware of the darkening phase, carefully and strictly followed instructions. btw, i used it mainly for small dark spots as a result of tweezing otherwise my armpits are fair. Result- whole armpits black as charcoal. I communicated with them midway in the process, was told to continue because im still in the darkening phase,,, now what,,,it has been 2 mos and i cant look at my armpits!!!!!!!!! I cant wear sleeveless anymore because it apears too obvious ive got fair skinned, so much for wanting to perfect my fair armpits and rid the tiny sporadic dark spots, now ive got black armpits which will take time to heal. Regrets.

Like, compeltely lightened. it was crazy. i wrote her an email and told her thank you so much for talking me into keep using it becuase i would have qiut aND it probably wouldnt have worked.

Hi, so I hear a lot of good things about this cream called divine derriere. A lot of you say that its cheaper on eBay, but I've looked for it and it wont even come up, so is it a lie that its on eBay or the only place you can get from is their website?

For those of you that are looking for Devine Derrier on Ebay....dont look there anymore....they took their products off of ebay and are selling their products on their site at the same discounted price that they had it on ebay....so for $53.00 you can buy the whole kit....its more expensive if you buy it seperately....so remember, they are not working with ebay no more they decided to sell their products at the same discounted rate without the middle man ;)

Hello ladies & gentlemens.. I've read all comments & I would like to share my experience with you all. I too have dark underarms, started out in middled school (14-15 yrs old) I never had anyone to teach me about hygiene or how to properly take care of my underarms. I've suffered so many years of having dark/ugly underarms, I tired just about everything. Anything for beautiful underarms! But nothing ever worked. One day I was looking up on YouTube how to get rid of dark armpits & came across a before & after video of a women who used Xtreme Brite brightening gel. I did research, read reviews & after thinking long & hard as to weather I should spend my money on it or not, I decided to go ahead & just give it a try (why not right?) I got my product in the mail on march 1st 2013. I used it the same night! (i exfoiliated really well with soft soap & a little bit of baking soda) i rinsed with warm water then rinse with super cold water to close up any open pores, patted my underarms dry & then applied a thin layer of the gel. I was so anxious I kept checking every 15-30 mins to an hour, I didn't expect to see any changes but I noticed it working, I felt it working. I went To bed & the next morning I had lighter armpits! I kid you not! This product is powerful so I only use it twice daily. Exfoliating daily as well. It's only been close to a week but I will continue to use it. I feel sexier & confident already! Remember that everyone is different & it might not all work at the same pace or the same way but I do recommend this product to Anyone who wants to give it a try for yourselves.
