How to Lighten Dark Underarms

If you have an underarm area that is dark then you are not alone. Many women suffer from this condition yet they each think that they are the only one with the problem.

I have underarms that are darker than the rest of my skin and for this reason I do not wear sleeveless clothes. The dark skin under my arms has long been a concern of mine because it makes me so uncomfortable.

Dark Underarms are caused by:
  • Strong Chemicals
  • Too Much Shaving
  • Dead Skin Build Up
  • Medical Conditions
  • Friction
Ways To Deal with it:
I have read many different methods for dealing with the dark skin in the underarm area and decided to try out some of them.

This is a bit gross but here is a picture of my underarms before I started any of the treatments. Even though the (camera phone) picture is poor you can see the line of difference between the underarm area and the rest of my skin. While the rest of my skin is brown the underarm area is quite black and just plain ugly.

Rub Lemons Under Arms
All I can say is that I would have been better off making lemonade. While lemons do have bleaching properties they did not work under my arms. I would rub lemon juice under one arm every evening after taking a shower as soon as I got home.

I went to bed smelling slightly sweet and lemony but after one week the left armpit (with lemon) looked just like the right one (no lemon).

Stop Using Antiperspirant/Deodorant

Well this one was not an option for me because I perspire a lot. I would apply my regular stuff in the morning and then wash it off as soon as I got home in the evening. I would shower again in the morning and apply some antiperspirant because I knew I would be sweating all day. In my job I have to walk around a bit so it is not like I was just sitting at a desk in the air conditioning all day. On Friday evenings I would wash off the underarm stuff and not use any on Saturday. I would reapply some on Sunday so I could go to church and run other errands but then take it off again until Monday morning.

Both armpits remained equally dark even though I have been doing this for a month now. Some people mention that if you must use a product then you should use Dove Moisturizing products because the dark skin might be as a result of skin that is too dry.

I substituted Dove with no results under my arms but it did leave a residue on my clothes and made them light!!!!

Wax instead of Shaving

I have always shaved under my arms or used a depilatory cream but I had never waxed before. I bought a Sally Hansen wax kit with the prewaxed strips and got busy. I took a shower, then dried my under arm area and rubbed the strip between my hands to warm it up. I peeled the strips apart and placed one under my arm and followed the directions and then let it rip.

Ouch!!!!

Waxing hurts.

A lot.

Especially when it is your first time and you are doing it yourself.

Waxing is supposed to help with the discoloration by removing all the layers of dead cells each time you pull the strip off. I was lucky that I did not bleed because I felt such an intense pain for a few seconds. The pain subsided quickly so I went in for another strip because I had not gotten all of the hair off.

I have waxed for three days now because I have not been able to get all the hair from one area out with one swipe. I am only doing the right armpit so I can compare the effects of the waxing to the other side.

I think the waxing is working....or maybe it is just my imagination because I am so tired of trying different things out.

I will continue waxing for about a month and then I will repost the pictures from that. I need to let the hair grow out a little longer so the wax can grip it so I can pull it out.

Have you tried to lighten your underarm area? What have you tried and did it work?

I use glutathione soap and as much as possible i never use deodorant or anti perspirant.

nice tips hun. I have actually a blog entry about this subject too. :)

Where do you get that soap from? I am heading over to your blog to read about that entry...maybe it will help me too.

Laarni...I can't find your post on your blog..can you direct me?

May I suggest you stop shaving because the friction of the blade's edge against your skin is causing it to darken. Also glutathione soap is very much available in many outlets. I get my supply from Watson's and I also alternately use Kojic Soap which has a lightening agent (Kojic Acid).

How about scrubbing them during shower? Someone told me.. I am trying it out.

i use silka green papaya soap.

i've tried the belo concoction before but that didn't work either.

on deodorant, i use dove and nivea. they're easy on the skin and doesn't irritate as much.

Wow! I don't know if I would have the nerve to wax that area - just the thought made me cringe. I'm so glad you shared this... very brave. :) I've been able to get my underarms to lighten a bit over the last couple of years. I scrub when I wash then I used an alcohol pad or alcohol on a cotton ball and it removes the leftover residue or whatever and dead skin. I always use alcohol after shaving to reduce itching and bumping - that works great. I would, however, like to see my underarms even lighter so I'm interested to see your update!

@ Skin Beauty Maven:
I have stopped shaving since I started waxing. I will have to look for that soap.

@ Lynxx:
What do you scrub with? I use a washcloth to wash underarms and I scrub hard. It is not a matter of dirt.

@ Mari:
I use Dove sometimes too but I sweat a lot and I don't feel as comfortable when I use it.

@ Petula:
I too am anxiously awaiting the day I can see lighter underarms because I want to be able to wear some nice clothes this summer.

I was afraid to do the waxing at first but it is not so scary anymore. :-)

hi! i also tried dove, the cream they prescribe at belo, and lemons, but i wasn't happy with the results. i wrote a blog about what worked for me on http://vanitykit.blogspot.com. hope that will work for you too. note though that mine were not black, but still noticeably darker before i started my regimen for the underarms.

the house of oabgi in alabang town center and trinoma offers sensi peel, supposedly a safe peel specifically for the underarms. i haven't tried this yet, but if i were to try peeling, i think this is the one that can be most trusted because of the obagi name.

I have this same problem and I am so happy that I am not the only one. I bought this stuff from DermaDoctor.com, but that didn't work. It actually made my underarms darker, so I stopped using it. I am in desperate need of help! Any suggestions?

I am still working on getting my own underarms lighter.

I have not had any luck as yet but I am still trying.

i had problems with dark underarms since i was 12, when i started shaving my armpits. I actually just bought something online and i've only been using it for 2 weeks, but saw results in 1 week. My armpits are just about the same color as the rest of my skin :). my family says that it's not even dark anymore, but i'm working on it so that in my eyes they are the exact same color. I highly recommended this product. My sister is starting to work on her underarms because they're very very dark too, she's using the set i have because she really liked how it worked for me. it's a set which includes a green peeling oil, aluminum chloride w/ melawhite, hydroquinone bleaching cream and the other cream they provide in case you get redness or irritation. I bought mine from ebay for about $23. good luck to everyone. :)

Diva In Training said...

Donna what is this thing that you are using? I am desperate now. Tell me the name.

Unknown said...

there isn't really like a name or brand to it.. go to ebay and type in "underarm whitening" and then you should find a set and it includes 2 creams the hydroquinone and the hydrocortisone, and then the aluminum chloride w/ melawhite and again the green peeling oil. most of the sellers are from the philippines but there are some that are shipping them out right from california. i wished i had taken pics for a before & after comparison. i'm also sharing this information because i know what it feels like.

Diva In Training said...

Thank you Donna. I guess I will look for it then because I need the help.

hi, i had not black but a little dark underarms when I got pregnant. so after that, i went to a dermatologist and had laser and blue peel. but unfortunately, my underarms just got darker. I am just 22 right now and i'd desperate in using very nice clothes specially this summer. Also since I have a slim body. The only thing that holds me back is because of my dark underarms. I checked this website south beach solution and meladerm in yahoo, and i'm so confused if which is the best product among these two.. because i don't want to make mistake again, and i won't take it if it'll give me darker underarms. Please help me choose among these two. Thanks so much! and I'll really appreciate your help!

I scoured the internet for tips and tried a bunch, not much success.

I stopped shaving about one week ago. On one underarm I use an epilator. (it surprisingly doesn't hurt as much as I thought it would, I was ready for some major pain). I'm not doing anything with the other underarm. I also started to use a pumice stone. I make sure the pumice stone is very wet before beginning. Then I lightly increase the pressure as I rub in a curcular motion. I use the pumice on both underarms.

Unsure if it's just me, but both underarms seem to be getting a tinge lighter. But like you, it may just be my imagination since I'm tired of trying things.

Cristina said...

Following Donna's advice and I'm going to try one of the kits from eBay. They seem to vary in the amount each one offers. Wish me luck!

Im glad im not alone. It sucks not being able to do the "wave" when weaing a tank top or splashing around in a bikini right?

I love the tips and the person who posted the whole topic is so brave.

Cristina said...

Well I bought the kit on eBay, and unfortunately, I didn't have much luck. As a matter of fact, even though it may have made the initial dark areas a little bit lighter, it darkened all the area around my arm pit. :( The first day's application felt fine. The second day's application stung a bit since the green peeling oil had started to work. By the third day, it stung like hell when I applied it. It seriously brought tear to my eyes. But I was determined to get rid of the dark skin so I went through with the process. It took a few days for the peeling to start after the 3rd and final application. The peeling then took a few days to subside. Then you you start with the provided bleaching cream and deodorant. The area around my arm pit stayed red and never fully peeling, that's the part that ended up getting darker. Ugh.

I think I'm going to stick with:
- not shaving
- using a pumice stone
- and a mild & natural deodorant

Will give you an update.

Diva In Training said...

I am sorry that your kit did not work out for you Cristina.

I am getting frustrated with the waxing because it hurts so much and I can barely see any results.

Oh well I will keep plugging away at it because I can see the dark skin coming off in the wax.

you should really save up to have it lasered, sobrang worth it. your pits will ligten in time. I posted a comment on your most recent post.

You must try Amira Magic cream if you haven't. The Belowhite cream didn't do wonders for me. I used that for 30 days. rested my pits for another 30 days then switched to Amira. Voila. saw whitening na.

Though I have to admit that mine wasn't as dark as yours but Amira delivered considerable results.

You can use Amlactin 2% it is a humectant cream but it smells little chemically but it works, you can buy it in drugstore/ walmart without prescription. you can use it over night and then shower it in the morning. use herbal deodarant like Toms.

I wax my underarm area periodically. It does seem to cut down on the darkness factor. I use this one: http://www.salonhive.com/wax-n-waxing-starter-kit.html

It is very simple to use and I have been very happy with the results.

I have been using a soap called Hibiclens it is a medical grade soap and i bought it at walgreens it comes in a turqoise bottle it is about 8 bucks. I apply it to my wet pits and leave it on for a minute then take a warm white wash cloth and rub it off. You can see the dirty come off it does not completely whiten but helps alot. I use it every other day.

FYI -if you didnt know that if lemon is not rinsed of after 15 min. it can add to darkening.so if you leave it on no longer than 15 min. and shower right away then you should see results..

I use "Block and White" for 1 month... I see the light results... but during our PE class,(I perspire a lot) I smelled bad. I switch to "Nivea Deodorant Extra Whitening (with a sticker that says: Pore Minimizer)" I already use it for 3 weeks but its not that light even if I use Glutathione soap for my underarm... so I continue Block and White (pink) deo/anti-perspirant powder because I have just 10 days to ready for our dance with a sleeveless costume.I swipe it 2x a day...so that during our PE i'll not be smelly but darker results... After the dance, I continue Nivea... hay!

If its already empty, should I switch to Dove deo? Please help!

Hey there...I have this problem too. I've had it for a couple years, and I must say it's affected me a lot. I'm only 15 and a half, and I constantly ask people for help, but they always brush it off like it's no big deal. My mom doesn't care either. I've cried over it too...I know, sounds ridiculous, but I'm just so insecure about it.
About a year ago I purchased a peeling kit from eBay...it contained green peeling oil. Maybe you've heard of it? Google it and you can find it. It did help to lighten my underarms significantly, but I STILL have discoloration. I'm so frustrated with the condition of my underarms, but maybe it can help you. Good luck.

I have also tried everything under the sun, even prescription hydroquinone 4% and still had bad results. The only two bleaching agents I am aware of are hydroquinone (which is suppose to work better than kojic acid) and Kojic acid. I have been told by my dermatologist as well as other professionals that kojic acid is usually given to individuals after they have used hydroquinone (assuming that hydroquinone worked) to keep up the results. I figured that everybody is different and therefore, will have different reactions to all of these products. So I started using hydroquinone 4% on my underarms, I believe it is called Eldoquin and I have been using it for about a month and still no results. On the other hand, I also purchased a kojic acid lotion from my local WholeFoods store; it is called Skin Brightening Serum with Kojic Acid and is made by Devita. At $25.00 bucks I thought it was a bit expensive for just 1oz but what the hell..... Over the years I have spent hundreds of dollars on other high-end "brightners" such as those by Jan Marini and Rhonda Allison, so why not pay 25.00 for this one. Anyway, I have been using the kojic acid on my inner thighs for approx 6 weeks, EVERY NIGHT before I go to bed and I am on my second bottle. So far I am loving the results as my inner thighs are much much lighter. I am considering stopping the HydroQ and using this serum for my underarms instead. Although I still don't understand why the HydroQ hasn't worked one bit. Anyway, hope this helps and if anyone has had any experiences with any of these products, I would appreciate some feedback. Thx

I'm have super fair skin, and I used to not use deodorants or antiperspirants as I was afraid that my underarms would darken, and of course they'd look really obvious.

However, I started feeling uncomfortable with my sweats pits (haha!). So I tried using WHITENING DEODORANT/ANTIPERSPIRANT because I figured that since they were made to whiten, it would be outrageous if they darken my underarms.

I've been using the deo for months now and so far, it hasn't lighten my underarms, but neither has it darkened it. My mom, who developed slightly dark underarms from other deodorants started using my brand too, and her underarms are almost back to their original color.

So yeah, I suggest that if you really can't avoid using deodorants or antiperspirants, use a whitening deo instead.

Try getting a traditional Korean Body Scrub. Try going to a place that is authentic so that they really scrub your underarms and if they don't ask them to and tell them the skin on your underarms is not delicate because of all the dead skin build-up:

http://nymag.com/listings/beauty/xrch/

http://www.olympusspa.net/Lynnwood/our-services.aspx

Its a little expensive, but you only have to get it done a couple times a year.

Afterwards, use shamask-2 everyday:

http://www.herbalsalon.com/vishh11031.html

Using tend skin from time to time and using a good shea butter soap and putting on a cream for very sensitive skin (like a face cream) at night on your underarms in addition to the scrub and the mask helps.

I came across your site because I have the same problem. The only tip I want to give you is the Wax Strips are the worse thing you can possible use! they break the hair- not cmpletley removing it from the root- its not has efficient as WAXING them. The first time, go to a salon, grow out your pits for about 2-3 weeks- pay the $15 and get them waxed- thereafter, by sally hansen brazilian cream wax with strips (will run you about $10) and use the warm wax with strips and you will notice the difference ASAP. Trust me! email me with questions: thaisc21@gmail.com this has helped me tremendously, and hey if im wrong all youve lost is $10. but trust me, i have struggled wiht this my entire life and this TOTALLY worked for me and my pits are exactly like yours!

Hello ladies, this is just an update on my usage of kojic acid. The good news is that my underarms are still getting lighter. I can't say that they're back to their original color because I no longer remember what this color was. In addition, I have been receiving a lot of emails re: individuals with the "dark underarms" problem, and I would like to take a minute to please encourage you all to start at the bottom of the problem; for instance, I am a 27 y/o mexican female in good health. My first step to finding a solution to my problem was to identify if this is only something that happens to mexican individuals. Once I found that this was not the case, my second step was to see if my mom/sisters had the same problem, which they do. Then I did lots & lots of research through reputable sources (very important to use only reputable non-biased sources) to identify the causes of the problem. I found out that Africans, Indians and Mexicans produce a lot more melanin(melanin is the substance that produces pigment/color) than caucasians do. That is why this problem is mostly seen on the above mentioned races. You also have to take into consideration your age and if you're pregnant because these can cause a hormonal change that could very well be responsible for the problem. Also, there's the debate of waxing Vs shaving. The reality is that when you shave, you are only "trimming" the hair while the root of the hair stays behind stuck in your skin. However, when you wax, you are pulling both the hair & root out which allows the sking to look lighter because there are no dark roots/spots being left behind. But you have to make sure that you familiarize yourself with the proper way of waxing, otherwise it can be painfull and you can get ingrown hairs and minimal bleeding. Those that say that waxing will lighten your underams are correct; as I just explained why. However, for those of us who have dark pigment all over the underarm area, waxing will help us look lighter, but only in ther areas/pores where the hair was pulled while the rest of your uderarm will still look dark. I would also recommend using a pumice stone (I purchased mine at my local target) about twice a week while in the shower; especially if you shower with hot water. The pumice stone will get rid of the the build-up and will exfoliate your underarms. As many of know, heat/steam/hot water will open-up your pores and allow for better clean-up/removal of build-up. Anyway ladies, before running to the store to purchase ANY recommended products, please do your research. Especially if you intend to purchase some of the pricey products out there. Best of luck and feel free to contact me with any questions. blnjones218@gmail.com -BLANCHE

I experience that and after much research and asking questions, sometimes the darkening can be an implication of other problems (i.e. polycystic ovarian syndrome, diabetes) but none of those I have. I went to the dermatologist and was prescribed tazorac for darkening ex-pimple spots on my face. It helps to take off top layers of skin.
I asked my doctor if I could use it under my arms as well and she said yes. Between waxing (going to a salon, I could not do it myself), use my loofah regularly, and tazorac at night it has lightened significantly. Good luck!

Farasa said...

I tried waxing for the first time yesterday. It was horribly painful and I started bleeding a little. Besides being messy, it didn't remove all the hair! When I removed the wax strip, I noticed that it was slightly brown from the dirt of my skin, so it must have removed at least some of it.

One thing I'm worried about though is that my armpits still are saggy and have creases on them. I know most people have an armpit crease but I have at least three and they make my armpits look saggy! Any tips on tightening the skin as well?

Cristina said...

Hello Ladies! It's Cristina again.

I haven't had much change since I last posted. The armpits are slightly lighter than when I started. After the eBay lightening kit fiasco, I went back to natural deodorants, using an epilady (for hair removal) and a pumice stone int he shower. As I said keep this regime has kept them from getting any darker.

My biggest problem is that I find that most deodorants stop working for me, i.e., I feel smelly. lol I've never had a problem with controlling wetness (knocks on wood), but I do with odor. Does anyone have a natural or non-harsh odor controlling deodorant they love? I'd appreciate any suggestions. Especially if they're more on the natural side, as I don't want to redarken my armpits.

Hi, namez anjali , i have also bought the underarm whitening set from ebay. i started using it today. i hope it works for me. wish me luck.

i know cristina said it didn't work for her, but u nevre know it might work for me. i will try it and i will write here if it works for me.
after researching online i found out it could be a problem related to eating too much sugar and stuff i dont' really remeber wht exactly was it, but i guess the dermatologist should be able to help if nothing works.

Hi Diva in Training!! I also have quite dark armpit and also frustrated to do something about it. After some researches, I noticed that lots of bleaching agents contain hydroquinone. I tried to drop by the near drugstore at home and asked for hydroquinone. They gave me Eldopaque Forte Cream with 4% hydroquinone (with sunblock). I'll try it tomorrow (as I need to do patch test first for 24 hrs) and I will keep you posted if I notice some changes. However, hydroquinone can cause cancer. But some dermatologists say bleaching creams with hydroquinone are safe, but only if used as directed.

Goodluck to us!!!

Tawas crystal can whiter the under arm but if you are acidic it cause irritation, so you better make it powder

Calamansi also can whiter the under arm

hi, i share with all your woes.. for about a month now i've ended using deodorants and began to use milcu powder (its a tawas/alum in powder form that i bought for less than Php100/$2) i hope its available from where u are since it really works for me. i have used a lot of different whitening products already, but with this one i can say that my woes are close to invisibility..although milcu dloes not claim to whiten our underarms, it does not however contributes to darkening our underarms. also, i have stopped shaving my pits, what i do is i let the hair grow and cut them with facial scissors about every two weeks since i'm wearing blazers at work. just now, i started scrubbing my pits with lemon. hope it delivers positive results! goodluck to us!

I am a 30 year old Asian female who has had dark underarms since my teens. I have tried waxing ONCE and it hurt so badly and didn't remove any hair. I think it's because my hair is just too thick there, and possibly because I didn't know what I was doing. One day, I found a pimple on my underarm and decided to dab some glycolic acid(60% strength) on it, and it accidentally spilled all over my armpit area--I should have used a q-tip. Anyway, even after I wiped it all up, my whole underarm area was stinging quite a bit, and the next day it felt super raw. About 2 days after that, it started peeling, and I know this probably sounds very TMI, but I rubbed off the dead peeling skin with a slightly damp handtowel and it revealed skin much lighter like the rest of my body! I was impressed, but I don't think the pain was worth it so I didn't do it to my other armpit. It was an interesting accident though, and makes me think maybe I just need to find a better method of exfoliation of the area to help diminish the darkness. I think my skin turnover rate is super fast on my body so I constantly have to exfoliate. I'm just not so good about it with the underarms. Neither of my sisters have the same problem, and neither does my mom or dad. I guess I'm just blessed like that :P

Anonymous said...

This solution worked for me.

First, I used a Braun Epilator once a week to remove the hair (warning: it is very painful initially if your roots are very deep, but it does pull the hair out from the root unlike waxing with I feel only rips part of the hair out).

Second, I started using Nubian Heritage soups (www.nubianheritage.com)

Third, twice a week after I shower I wipe my underarms with Johnson & Johnson Clean & Clear Astringent to remove dead skin build-up.

Fourth, before I shower, I massage extra virgin olive oil and leave it on for 30 minutes every day.

Fifth, I stopped using deodorant except when absolutely necessary. Instead, I wipe my underarms several times a day and use an anti-fungal powder (the kind used for athlete's foot). I also use perfume every day to help with odor control.

Sixth, I use a chamois butter (the kind bikers use to prevent chafing). I chose one that has tea tree oil in it.

Seventh, I exfoliate twice a week with the exfoliating gloves you get at whole foods.

Eighth, I get a traditional Korean body scrub whenever I can.

This is a crazy long process, I know, but it totally worked for me.

For the 30 year old Asian female who has had dark underarms since my teens, you may want to try Tend Skin. After using it for a few days, all the dead skin from your underarms starts to peel off...it also helps with ingrown hairs...

Cristina said...

RE: Tend Skin post. Really? I use Tend Skin on my bikini line when I shave, its amazing for ingrown hair. I swear by that product for ingrown hairs, never thought of using it for lightening! I'm gonna try it out.

I used to have a very dark underarm because i sweat a lot and then i become so stinky if i dont put deodorant. then i started really eating healthy, more veggies, fruits and real foods, no junkfoods and sodas...i observed that when i sweat (btw, there's nothing wrong in sweating, in fact its very healthy)it doesnt smell so bad anymore. i just continued eating healthy then one time i just stopped using deodorant because its really the main cause of having dark underarm plus the negative health effects of those chemicals. im just using tawas now..which helps lighten your skin. I guess your skin naturally goes back to its normal color if you do not put much chemicals on it. just let it heal and find its PH balance again. I noticed my underarm is getting lighter each day although it takes longer..also, i read somewhere, that expoliating your underarm will really help. in this case, i used baking soda with cetaphil to scrub my underarm...i am just gunna try waxing my underarm so i will see if waxing will help....

Some solutions that might work
1. Baking soda. While taking a shower rub in some backing soda..in clockwise and then anticlockwise direction under the arm pit, a couple of times. Then leave it to soak in for a minute or two then wash off with soap. Dry and pat on some mild cream or lotion(non-perfumed) like Johnsons baby lotion or Aveeno. Don't wear deodarant or any form for antiperspirant atleast for the next 8 hours. Doing this atleast 5 times in a week(in the night preferably) will help slough off dead skin and help lighten armpits. Hair eoval aslo becomes easy.
2. As an alternative to baking soda you can also try - any scrub(with salicyclic acid)
3. Some Indian grocery shops carry neem powder, fullers earth(Multhani matti), turmeric powder and sandalwood powder. Try applying a paste of any one of these under arms and wash them off in scrubbing(clockwise-anticlockwise) motions as they dry. This will help too. These are natural products. They usually do not have any side effects. Turmeric powder may burn a little(like baking soda) You can try a patch test before you try them.

Hi ! i stopped using deoderants since i found out that it darkens my skin. instead i use this natural spray called Spray Mist. All it had is purified water and natural sea salts. i found it at cvs pharamcy or online. it really works. its even better than deoderant sticks.

I had a dark underarm and tried calamansi, shaving, deodorant before mix it up and you'll have a burned skin. i went to a dermatologist and asked me what i did. she told me she had patients with the same case and told me:

1.STOP USING DEODORANTS because first of all they plug the pores and collect toxins which is making our bodies imbalanced
because underarms naturally need to sweat to eliminate the heat of our bodies. When it's plugged = accumulation of bacteria= body odor.

2. STOP SHAVING
although it's easier, it doesn't help at all. You're not only cutting hair but you are microscopically shaving your skin

3. DO NOT USE LEMONS
although they told you it's effective. it's acidic! it burns the skin especially if there's open wounds (shaved skin)

4. since i have very sensitive skin here are some products i tried that DIDN't WORK: block and white, rexona for sensitive skin, nivea whitening, nivea for sensitive skin, safeguard, dove, TAWAS, etc. almost every commercial products out in the market.

5. PLUCKING is also bad coz you yank it out but it's better than shaving and economical.

6. laser hair removal is doctor recommended and the whitening cream they suggest purchase it. it really works WARNING: make sure they are certified or authenticated trusted doctors.

i actually didn't had laser (too expensive) but i tried their whitening cream and it really worked!

Hi, my name is Jessie and I've recently had darkened underarms. I had bought Suave 24-hour protection Ocean Breeze I think it was. Within a week, my underarms became so incredibly dark it was worrisome. I noticed that when I would take a shower, and scrub really well, it would be lighter when I got out - so I tried switching my deodorant to Dove Powder. Sometimes it leaves white marks on black clothes, but that's only if you put on an excessive amount. Now my underarms have lightened an incredible amount - but their still dark to an extent, and I hate it. But it's something I'm willing to live with, rather than have to go through 'Underarm Skin Lightening.'

FOR THOSE WHO DON'T WANT TO USE DEO'S BUT DOESN'T WANT TO HAVE ODOR:
use sodium bicarbonate. u can buy it on every pharmacy there is. powder the pills and apply it to ur armpits after bath. apply twice a day, b4 u sleep at night and after bath by morning. this is very effective. though it doesn't help u whiten ur armpit, at least u wont have to use deo's with really strong chemicals again. then for whitening, i guess ul have to go with removing dead skins. use that stone or a loofah. and be PATIENT enough for the results. lemon are effective too. but be sure to apply at at least 5 mins and make sure to rinse it off. apply everyday, be PATIENT, and be happy with positive results! :)

how to cure chicken skin due to plucking???

I have started treating my dark areas (also under arms, as well as thighs vulva etc) like i would with my face and it is working well.

1) use a deep cleaner. soap does not penetrate the nook and cranny that deep cleaner do. The cheapest and the best is good old fashion cold cream.. try it. put a little on you pit, rub in and wipe away with a white dry wash cloth, you'll be amazed how much dead skin cells, dye and oil comes off.
2) exfoliate. use alpha hydroxy cream which can be bought generic and cheap.
3) tone: I use this to remove the excess cold cream as well as the alpha hydroxy. witch hazel is a cheap alternative to name brands
4) moisturize, but the key is with something that has vitamin A (Retonal A). Vit A plumps up your fine lines so that the deeper nook and cranny are even closer to the surface the next time you clean. this is the most expensive step.. the cheapest I've found that contains Retonal A is L'Oreall Revita lift for around $17.

so far it is working best on my thighs and vulva, probably because I still use deodorant, but I have seen a change, just not as fast as the other areas.

please help me...after waxing my underarms there were redness and pain that i felt which i thought was normal...but after 3 days the reddened area in my underarms became dark which now made my underarm look VERY BAD...what should i do about this? why did waxing had this kind of effect on my underarm?

Dudu Osun works really well. The soap really exfoliates your underarms and the rest of your body. It treated my acne and acne scars as well. You can buy it on Amazon.

I also use unrefined shea butter at night which helps a lot.

Going to a Korean bath house to get a body scrub helps. The longer you stay in the sauna the more skin comes off so I would try to stay in there at least 20 minutes. You can literally feel the air on your underarms after you get the scrub for 24 hours to give you an idea about how much dead skin build up was there.

Tend Skin is good too if you have a tremendous amount of build up, but you need to try other things to get your underarm completely white.

you can use baking soda,, it really works! just use it after taking a bath,, try twice a day,, it's odorless and doesn't make your underarm wet,, avoid using alum,, it would make your underarm darker..

I'm a fair skinned woman from India and my dark underarms have been the cause of endless hours of internet research. Not much success but here's whats worked for me to a remarkable extent.

Try soaking in a hot bath for about 20 mins and then shave your underarms, I've found that it makes a huge difference in how much clearer the skin looks, probably because a lot of dead skin gets sloughed off right away. I also use the St Ive's face scrub on my underarms right away .

I've also started using a creme called New skin scar therapy (about $5 from target)which has Dimethicone as an active ingredient, which is supposed to soften skin. I apply it twice a day and it has almost completely gotten rid of the chicken skin appearance in my underarms, which also makes for a better shave since there is no more visible ingrown hair. Also don't forget to use a scrub every other day.

So my skin while not exactly the same color as the rest of my body, is getting there for sure. I saw results pretty much in two days so its definitely worth a shot

I hope this helps. I know how annoying dark underarms are.

This is Cristina again! I've posted a few times with updates and things I've tried.

Recap:
*I've tried that three step kit sold on Ebay. It stings horribly and didn't do much for me int he long run. Seems the darkness returned soon after. In my honest opinion, the pain and peeling wasn't worth the temp results.
* I've tried a few of the whitening soaps and deodorants sold on Ebay as well, no difference.

This latest routine has made the most difference, and the results seem to be sustaining. 1) I no longer shave. I use an epilator. Yes, you do end up having to wait for your hair to be a bit longer in order to use the device but it's so totally worth it. Besides your hair seems to grow back finer, but it's just an illusion because the tip of the hair is thinner. 2) I try to use as natural of deodorants as possible. I currently use Tom's of Maine or Jason's brand. 3) Use Tend Skin solution. This is excellent to avoid ingrown hairs, which was the primary reason I started using it years ago. But it works great at clearing the skin off of build up as well. I only use it twice a week though, since it's alcohol based. I've read over and over again that harsh or alcohol based products can begin to darken skin after repeated long term use.

Good luck everyone!

Hello ladies, this is Blanche!
Just thought I'd give you gals an update. So, I have continued using the kojic acid since it has worked great on my thighs, however my UA's are a different story. I don't understand why it works so well on my thighs, yet so SLOW on my underarms. Anyway, I went to a Phillipino store in my area to purchase the Lykas Papaya soap that many ladies here have recommended; while paying for this product I got a glimpse of another products which I also bought for about $4.95. Anyway, I used the papaya soap on my face and UA's for approximately 3 months. I did notice that my "pimple scars" on my face faded somewhat, but this soap would leave my face incredibly dry. As far as UA's go, I did not notice any difference so I stopped using it. Next, I tried the "4.95" product I bought. This is called Maxi-peel. After purchasing it, I did some research online and found that this product is sold in three different strengths. I got the "step 1 with 2% hydroquinone solution." So I applied this product on my UA's 1 x day for four days. After the fourth day, my underarms began to peel for another 3 days. After these 3 peeling days my underarms looked a lot lighter, but there was a catch! while my upper UA looked much, much lighter, the lower portion of my pit was darker than the "upper" part. What just happened???? I don't know, but my assumption is that the maxi-peel penetrated the upper portion deeper than the lower (maybe?). Anyway, so I waited about a week and my pits remained unchanged as just described. Now it was time to wax, oh boy. I waxed and I guess I hadn't waited enough time so I BURNED my UA's. At the time, it wasn't painful nor did I feel any weird sensation, that's why I continued to wax my other UA. After 30 mins had gone by, my UA's began to burn and the mere contact of my arm against my pits hurt a lot. A week later, my UA's were all healed, but were dark again as a result of the burning! You can actually see the outline of the burnt skin :( So, I am back to square one and considered using the maxi-peel again, but am scared that only half of my UAs will lighten again. I ordered a "whitening kit" which others here have used from Ebay. I just started using it today and took some pics of my UA's to compare the b4 n after. I will give you all an update in about a week. Hopefully it will be a positive update. I also look forward to seeing Diva in Training's new pics.

Diva In Training said...

@ Blanche: I am so sorry that you are back to square one after going through the peeling. That sounds really painful and after all that no change.

hey guyz, ive been experiencing dark underarms for years, and i thought of using skinmate shark oil.wow, its incredible, just for a week, its lightens my underarm, even if you do do shaving.try it.

applying a peeling lotion to your dark underarm is a good routine to get rid of that ugly skin tone you have.. dark underarms are caused by piled up dead skin cells, and applying peeling lotion onto that, will get rid of it in no time.. trust me.. i've been there and done that.. my underarm were slightly dark also before because of shaving.. hop i helped

Emily said...

@ Blanche
Same here, I went crazy with the peeling because I got so frustrated and then my skin got chemical burns! As you can imagine, the peeling didn't help my discoloration, just added even more to the skin around it. That happened a little less than a year ago and it took me about five or six months to completely get rid of the discoloration caused by the chemical peeling--I used vitamin E and emu oil and that worked because I don't have that discoloration anymore. However I still have the original discoloration in my underarms and it is PISSING ME OFF!! This is about to be the fourth year I've had this problem, dammit!!!!! Oh yeah, Tend Skin does make your skin peel...I tried that on my underarms but still no difference, so my problem definitely isn't caused by dead skin buildup. Hahah well obviously, I should've realized that when the chemical peel didn't do crap for me. Why can't I just have normal underarms? *sigh*

Anonymous said...

Try purchasing one of those stones (pumice stone) that people use on their feet to soften them and use it on your armpits instead...I know that it sounds strange but one of the causes of darkening underarms is deodorant build up (basically you're not completely removing your deodorant when you shower). The stone exfoliates the skin, removing dead skin cells (another factor in darkening skin). Also try wiping with tea tree oil after scrubbing. Hope this helps.

*side note* scrubbing with the stone also eliminates excessive sweating.

Do not use Maxipeel or any products that contains HYDROQUINONE on your underarms or on any other part of your body! Products that contains this chemical is already banned in some countries due to the discovery that it might cause cancer. These products will definitely whiten your skin, however it makes your skin thinner and more sensitive to sunlight and infections. I am a chemist and we have tested these kind of stuff, that is why if you suffer from any skin discoloration it is still advisable to consult a dermatologist before trying out anything..and remember never use products that contains hydroquinone! Because if you do, you will not just suffer from dark underarms but you will also develop other horrible skin problems.

you might have a condition called acanthosis nigricans which is usually caused by type 2 diabetes or insulin resistance. I had this problem and after I got my weight down from 240 pounds to 130 it went away on it's own. I also recommend you exfoliate on a weekly basis.

THESE ARE THE PRODUCTS I'VE USED:

1)I bought the 'Likas Papaya Herbal Soap' on amazon, used it for quite a while, no dramatic results, just makes my skin soft. I use it in the shower every night on my underarms and EXFOLIATE with a PUMICE STONE I bought at TARGET. I still use this product. Recently when I get out of the shower I Soak the soap in water and just lather it on my underarms and let it dry then go to sleep like that. In the morning I just dab on my antiperspirant over the dry soap. I'm just experimenting, hoping something works.

2) I've used 'Total Nonscents Ultra-Gentle Brightening Antiperspirant' by Dermadoctor as my antiperspirant (besides deodorant). I bought it at Sephora make up stores and so far I've used one bottle and still no luck. I want to keep faith in it because it says give it about 8 months so I've purchased another one.

3) I recently bought "Fair & White Gel Cream Strong Bleaching Treatment" on Amazon, heard it has 3.6% HYDROQUINONE and its unsafe to use, but dermatologists perscribe this drug at 4%, and with my desperation I'm just up for anything now.

If that doesnt work, i do plan on using that underarm packet kate jones stuff

http://blog.kate-jones.com/?p=9

Hope my story and my history on product purchases help. Before any product I did use lemon juice on my underarms for about 15min before getting in the shower, wasn't quite successful with that home remedy.
I feel like the pores of my underarms are clogged with deodorant from past years and I don't know what to do about that. Any help on that?

Hi..i have the same problem..have read all ur posts..n feel the same way..most of the chemicals seem to have side effects and am really scared to use them..
I had actually asked my grandma if she knew bout some home made remedies and here is what she said.I dont remember the proportions, but u need to mix them all to get a thick paste.
1 portion of milk/cream( not canned, the cream layer over the milk after boilin)
1 portion of lemon juice
1 portion of sweet lime juice
1 portion of dry orange peel (orange peels dried under sun and grinded)
1 portion rose water
leave the paste on for bout 45 mins. I used to do it the moment i would wake up so that i could finish my morning chores and take a bath to go to work..
my armpits were BLACK and i applied it for about 15 days...they turned brown..which was definitely an improvement..since they din seem that bad...i stopped using it..i also moved to epillatin (shaving earlier) and now apply a cold cream at nite when i go to sleep..to make the dead skins easier to remove in the mornin while i scrub them with a loofa at bath..if anybody has easy remedies..pls let me know

6. laser hair removal is doctor recommended and the whitening cream they suggest purchase it. it really works WARNING: make sure they are certified or authenticated trusted doctors.

i actually didn't had laser (too expensive) but i tried their whitening cream and it really worked!

where did you go?what is the name of the whitening cream?

We have the same problem too.. I'm applying Belo essentials moisture-rich whitening toner (w/c is actually for the face) to my armpit everytime I finish taking a bath and then I'm trying the new Nivea xtra whitening cell repair deo after the toner dries of.. I've been doing this for about a week or almost two weeks maybe and I think my underarm lightened a bit so I'll continue doing this to see if there will be a dramatic change.

I dont shave because my hair is grows quickly and it is irritating and itchy when it grows back so i just pluck it. But now, I've learned from some site I don't remember anymore that its important to moisturize the skin first before shaving or plucking. The hairs felt more easier to pluck. I'm using Vit E (just pinprick one cap gel) to moisturize my underarms before I pluck the hairs.

my underarms were as dark before until i used tawas powder. first, i deep my regular roll-on deodorant into the tawas powder and just apply it everyday..in just a month time you will see its whitening effect plus there is no odor factor..no hassles of making itchy concoctions plus you can buy powdered tawas that even come with scents at way cheap prices..try it!

i've been trying NG glutathione with kojic acid soap for my underarms every shower, then every morning ang night, i apply a paste of lemon juice, turmeric powder and coconut oil on my pits then rinse it after 1 minute. i've ended using deodorants but instead, i u'm using an anti-fungal powder. i also rub baking soda on my pits after shower..
you try it! it works for me and the result can clearly seen in just a week.. and avoid shaving and plucking as possible..

Girls!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! dont worry if you have darker underarms. I have a solution to all your problem but you really have to be patient. I have couple of things to tell you before you start treating your underarms... it follows as below
1) Always scrub your underarms with a good body scrubber ( it should contain sharp granuales to scrub). yu can make one at home as well. Grind gram lentils to coarse and use it.

2) Wax whenever there is sufficient growth in your UA, not too less not too much.

3) use sensitive skin antiprespirant/deo. (use this regular as you may do usually)

4) do not keep UA skin wet or sweaty. if you feel/think you are sweating/wet please wash off your UA.

5) always mosturie your UA with good Mosturiser before you use DEO/ANTIPRST.

5) Now the final thing... and most important... A product called Melalite cream, i have used it previously about 10-12yrs ago for my freckles and it worked like magic, i also applied some to my face..i turned very fair...hee hee.
** warning- do not buy this product online as i m not sure if they real or duplicate one. dont get cheated. I bought melalite from India, so if you have anybody who stay there request them to courier you.

If you follow this regularly.. i am 100% sure you will get your esults. Only buy scrubbing, waxing, mosturing you will see results in 5-6mths and if you apply Melalite then may be weeks or 1-2mths depends on individual condition.

Tips: as you cannot use mosturiser and melalite at same time, you can use melalite at night or you can also apply mosturiser le it absorbed by skin and then melalite or vice versa as you wish. but results will be 100%.

I am nt promoting any product, its by personal experience. Though i dont have underarms hair naturally i still wax my skin to keep them clean. Also to let you guys know.. i got dark UA during pregnancy and i suffered that for 3 and half yrs but then i started this and now i am so happy with all the pain i took to get rid of them.

e-mail me results or questions on kate.mc24@googlemail.com
All the best you beautiful girls!!!!

Updates girls? I also have dark underarms. It started when I was in highschool. I used secret deodorant and it made my armpit very dark.

I have tried lots of whitening cream but didn't work. It only made my pits darker. I also tried bleaching. The result - Darker Armpit!

I was so desperate. I tried using Amira but it made my pits darker and smelly so I just stopped using it. What a waste of money. Now, I'm scrubbing lemon on my underarms. It lightens it a bit during the first week. I've been using it for a year now. It's lighter but still noticeably black. Any suggestions for faster whitening? Lemons work but it may take me forever.

iam not here to suggest any product that will reduce black discoloration:
i would like to suggest a product that i use to prevent underarm darkening... as in my case, i used to apply antiperspirant regularly before during college, but i noticed it slowly darkens my armpit, so i switch to tawas..it does help only in controlling the odor and darkening but not the sweating because of my "hyperidrosis" -its an excessive sweating that actualy wets your underarm, not just normal sweating.. i searched the internet for the hope of finding products that will control my sweating...among of them was "MAXIM" and i tried it due to some convincing reviews on their website.. it really works, and it does not darken my armpit. the liquid simply looks and feels like water. i have been using it for 10months already and it really improve my self esteem being a teacher.. this product is not yet available in the philippines. so if you want to avail it, be sure not to be faked!

Hi. I have dark underarms. I tried tawas or alum for years during my teen years. No effect, i perspire a lot and i used deodorants because I also smell if I perspire. I was plucking my underarm hairs. So I had chicken skin. Then when I was 28 I had my UA laser treated. So I had no more underarm hair. Just a few left. I dont pluck anymore. I just shave the very few hairs left because derma said hairs will start to grow again if I pluck. AnywY, My UA is still dark! I use niveA whitening. Maxi Peel is a strong exfoliant and if not applied cautiously, it will burn skin and will be darker than before. So dont use it.

I used genuine amira magic cream (only buy on legal resellers like watsons, etc)on the inguinal area and it was effective. However, it darkened my underarms so I wouldn't advise it for the underarms area. I used Nivea Extra Whitening (take note... you should use the stick deodorant & not the liquid one - the liquid one darkened my underarms) and it somehow whiten my underarms.

My 15 yr old athletic sister perspires a lot, smells and have dark underarms. i also tried many procedures and products to whiten my sister's underarm from lasers to homemade creams but i think what works for her is just dabbing kalamansi on her underarms. i don't advise rubbing because i think it can further irritate the skin. Now, after 2 months, it's close to her skin color. Anyway, eventhough she still perspires a lot, i just told her to just wash her UA, put some kalamansi again and change her clothes. This way, it is safe because there's no chemicals in it and its effective. Were so happy. i was really amazed that it boost her self-esteem. It did whiten her underarms and get rid of her body odor. Well, there was this time, When she had an infection in her right UA causing it to become darker and have "goosebumps", i tried to use clobetasol crm. it also works.

all i can say to lighten dark underarms is to be patient and always have a proper hygiene.

Hey everyone,

I can't remember exactly when the skin under my arms started to darken. I think it was during my highschool years. I had never waxed and always shaved that area. When I finally decided to tackle the situation the first thing I did was stop shaving and switch to waxing. The first time I went to the salon to get it done cause' the hair is too stubborn when you've shaved for too long. It didn't hurt as much as I thought but my pores did bleed, it's just cause the hair is sooo ingrown. The next time I went the hair came out easier and there was no blood and less pain. Just got to stick it out. After that I proceeded to I rub lemon slices there everyday for a couple of weeks. I also would rub baking soda into my armpits while in the shower to gently exfoliate the dead skin. I also used "optun", which is an indian skin lightening agent. It can be purchased at an indian store, its an all natural product that has tumeric and lemon in it and a whole bunch of other stuff. You basically make it into a paste and then spread it on ur armpits and leave it for about 15-20 minutes and then wash off. I'm going to warn everyone though, tumeric is a bright YELLOW color and it does stain the area for a few hours/ days and it takes quite a bit of scrubbing to get it out. However, because when you have dark armpits your not really wearing sleeveless shirts so it doesnt really matter if that area is slightly stained yellow for a day or two. I found that it worked wonders for me. A major point i'd like to emphasis is if your underarms are dark DO NOT SHAVE, it only furthers the problem. Waxing makes a HUGE difference. When I followed this regime strictly my armpits slowly started to lighten and I was able to wear tank tops without being conscious of the color of my underams. They became the same color as the rest of my body. I hope this works for you. Goodluck!!

I have hard dark underarms for years.. Tried everything. nothing seemed to work. I was overweight. I lost a few pounds for other health reasons. And surprisingly after the weightloss, my underarms are not dark anymore! Meybe it was friction from too much skin and also sweat which didnt get a chance to evaporate as the air could not reach between skinfolds. If you are overweight, try losing some weight. Along with lighter underarms, you are going to get a lot of other health benefits too :)

Problem solved!! I have had embarassing dark armpits as far back as I can remember. I bought Divine Derriere on ebay. I used it for three weeks, and BAM, my armpits look amazing!! I wanted to document any improvements that I might see, so I took a "before" picture when I started. Then, I took my "after" picture today, which is three weeks later. I sent my pictures to them, so they could see, but pictures speak a thousand words, so let me show you guys too!

My armpit three weeks ago:

Just to share, I have the same problem too. I tried so many products out there on the market and sad to say, none of them really worked. Lightening deodorants did nothing for me, and so did some soaps so I asked my friend about it. She just told me to use calamansi juice :) So I tried it. What I do is I squeeze out the juice of two calamansi onto a small plate and very very lightly pat them on each UA using my fingers for 3 minutes max each. Don't leave it on for too long because it might burn your skin and only cause further darkening. Don't rub your UA as well because UA skin is very sensitive. Just very lightly pat or dab it on. I do this every night before taking a shower before going to bed. Then I use papaya soap and water to wash it off. I also stopped shaving/plucking UA hair and I started using honey wax, and I use Dove deo. It has been close to two weeks since I started doing this routine and I can say that I can really see some change. It may not be that drastic of a change, but at least little by little, I know it works :) Once or twice a week I also exfoliate them. I use the Abonne spa milk salt or something the Asian Secrets lulur scrub thinggy. But I don't rub it on hard. As much as possible, be gentle with your UA :) All of these products I got from Watson's and the grocery for the calamansi :) Hope this helps.

Hi all,

I am a private person, a very busy mom, but my heart goes out to all who are in this thread.. I am sharing my time and my story with you guys. I am in no way connected to the companies of the products I will be referring to below, except that I am a user of their product.

Besides having dark underarm skin, I also had persistent bad odor in my armpit which in a way contributed to the darkening of the skin in that area.. Having body odor was far terrible than having dark armpit as the problem is much more difficult to hide and cure. I had for years, searched for a remedy, but was always met with failure and embarassment. Until I've began using Dove/Rexona "clinical protection" variant of anti-perspirant deodorant.. I think I've been using it for more than 2 years already. My realisation that I have been cured of my insufferable body odor did not hit me straight away.. About a year ago, I noticed that even without applying the deodorant, which I really never go without, my armpit stopped emitting bad odor the way it used to. I was so happy with my discovery, deodorants Ive tried before this one, was always a let down.. Now, there are days I skip putting my deodorant just to give my underarm skin a rest.. And in doing so, I dont turn out smelling bad. That was one major problem solved.

Ive read the long trail of posts here a few months ago.. It was both heartwarming and frustrating, reading through all the pains and the endless quest for that miracle solution.

I've done most of the things mentioned in here. Used lemons, tawas, deodorants with bleach, gone to the dermatologist for skin peeling. Still, using some fresh ideas from some of you here, I've again ventured into finding a cure to my dark underam.

I use papaya soap when I take a bath and would work up a lather in my underarm and rinse, and would do this at least twice. I try my best to remove the deodorant residue and dead skin on my armpit without rubbing too harsh on the skin. After taking a shower, and after drying myself, I use a cotton moistened with a gentle facial toner to gently remove dirt/residue that may still be in my armpit. I do it gently as I know friction on the skin results in darkening.. I let it dry after using the toner. Lastly, I apply Lyna or E-100 to my armpit.. These are facial skin bleaching creams that Ive bought from an asian store.. Ive no extensive info for you about these products, you can research them on the net. But my news for you is that, although I have been doing my armpit whitening regimen intermittently, meaning I havent done it religiously as I am always too busy.. I can vouch that my underarm skin has lightened considerably. I could say by 50 percent.. what I do know for sure is that I am happy with my results and I will continue with it, and hope that I could do it more consistently.. and maybe one day post here my story of 100 percent success.

Good luck to all of you..

hi I'm 17 woman from the Philippines. I have fair white skin and quite chubby. I am seriously embarrassed by my armpits. They are NOT really dark or black but they're quite brown. When I was still in my pre-teens, I remember having white pits. Then after few years, I noticed that my pits became brown. I don't know what happened but the pit discoloration really embarrasses me because I could NOT wear anything that is sleeveless.

I've use Nivea Whitening/Anti-Perspiration licorice something but it didn't help getting my pits whiter. I've stopped shaving too and now I practice waxing. Not the one with strips but its just wax being put on my pits and the lady does the magic.

I really want to get my pits lighten !!! HALP?

hi all!...
do try human nature's sunflower seed beauty oil... you can view product info and reviews at www.humanheartnature.com If you are in the United States, I think you can order it online. In the Philippines 1 bottle only costs 120 php. I don't have super dark underarms but they are darker than the rest of my body, id say this is because of shaving and using of commercial deodorants. iv tried many products... bleaching creams, whitening deodorants, and even applying lemon/calamansi juice... and diamond peeling, but nothing seemed to work. So i tried human nature's beauty oil and deodorant. I tried using the beauty oil every night for 2 weeks w/o much results but after religiously using it for a month my underarms improved by 60%... it has softened, smoothened (chicken skin disappearing), and whoa lightened my underarms...!!! I think after using this a few more weeks I will have my old underarms again.. weeee!!!... will update you on that.... But of course, I stopped using commercial deos... alcohol and fragrance can really darken ur underarms... i used human nature's deo but since it is all natural/organic it doesn't work for really sweaty people, so once it dries up I also apply good ole tawas... hehe.. and it has worked for me so far... exfoliating it once a week using an organic scrub and waxing instead of shaving helps too... so with these stuff iv been doing... i guess in 3 months i will have immaculate underarms already hehe... but then again, i will update you guys on my progress.. also do check the reviews of this wonderful beauty oil on their site.. id say it's true.. plus it's an all around product, can be used on dark undereyes, also works as a moisturizer, and could also soften and light knees and elbows.. without hurting ur sensitive skin since it is organic:) i super love this product and have been recommending this to a lot of friends .. soo good luck! im also trying this to lighten an old scar... still waiting for the results.. and will update u on it as well... if you have questions feel free to email me at babyangel_kai@yahoo.com ... just wanna share my good experience :)

instead of wasting time and money trying to do experiments on how to whiten your underarms just go straight ahead to a skin clinic. do an underarm peeling then followed by a bleach session. that's for sure that you will get whiter underarms. just start saving money for it now instead of wasting money on something that won't work. for deodorants, use godiva whitening deo, it has licorice on it proven to whiten skin. not sure if that is available in US but it costs for only Php150 ($3.5) in the Phils. goodluck to everyone

So naturally i thought i would try the same thing on my UA and people this is no joke less than 1 week the skin started to peel off just like that the only irritation i had was some intense itching which my friend also experienced. but my arms are no longer dark i was blow away by these results. I have had this problem for soo long and now i feel happpppppppy and i want to tell the whole world. You all should try this seriously i cnat stop looking at my arms

Thanks for this post! I was actually thinking of waxing my underarm. Now, I have decided not to.

JC said...

I have always shaved frequently but never had smooth underarms. I tried epilating and it wasn't as painful as I expected ( it was actually kind of satisfying in strange way) and unlike waxing or shaving, the hairs grow back softer rather than thick and black. The epilator I use is by Veet. Although it may hurt more for some people, it is far less painful than waxing and your skin gets used to it, similar to when you pluck your eyebrows. I also exfoliate my underarms with a luffa sponge every day and make sure I scrubb off any deodorant that I use. Spray deodrant tends to leave less residue. Also, the lemon technique does actually work but you only start to see results after a month or two so maybe you should stick at it! Hope this has been helpful to you, JC.

i've been consistently shaving every week for a couple of months now because i don't have time for plucking anymore. then i tried plucking again this week and i noticed that my underarms went darker than before. another thing is when i put on my deodorant(stick),it leaves a yellowish stain on my shirt. :| i'm now trying roll-on but same brand (it's antiperspirant btw). i know make-up won't do because i would smell after a while. i read about a spot lightening cream called Metaderm which the users say effective on dark underarms. anyone heard of it? and what else can i do/avoid to lighten my dark underarms?

Hi. I can help with odor/sweating issue. I suffered from really bad odor and embarrassing sweating for years. I tried maxim roll-on from an internet site and it works for me. I use it at night. It controls sweating and nasty odor. I don't use it every day any more... I've skipped weeks at a time...when i notice i'm getting sweaty i start again and alternate days. It doesn't burn or sting... and my armpits are no darker bc of it. Works much better than any prescriptions I got from doctor for hyperhydrosis.

I also have dark armpits like you all... I've had 6 laser hair removal treatments on my UA bc I use to have lots of bumps, ingrowns, etc.. The laser treatments made a huge difference in lightening and getting rid of bumps, however, my UA are still not the same color as the rest of my body. While I'm glad to have no bumps... I am still unhappy about the discoloration. I haven't had an UA laser treatment in a year and have shaved... Hairs grow back but no problem with individual bumps and scars thankfully...

I do feel like I have build up so I think I will try a body scrub and pumice stone on my UA. I will probably go to the laser place and get some bleach to help speed up the lightening. My bikini area is gross too. I had the cutest monokini bathing suit and held my beach bag over my bottom as much as possible because of darkness. I don't know...

I have had dark underarms since I was a teen. I have very dark/black hair and pale, pale skin (yea!). I know it sucks to never feel comfortable enough to raise your arms in public. I agree with the build up of dead skin cells being a big part of the problem. But I think that (even though it hurts ... a-lot!) that waxing really is the best way to cure the problem especially if you have dark underarm hair like me. I've done it for several months and it has completely changed the appearance of my pits and it really helps exfoliate the skin. If you think about it when you shave you are cutting the hair off halfway and the rest of the that dark ugly little hair is just under the surface creating a 5 o'clock shadow everday so unless you pull that sucker out it is only going to make your underarms look darker. My suggestion is to suck it up and try waxing for a couple of months and you'll be surprised that after awhile it will hurt a lot less and the hairs will be easier to pull out... plus it works!! Just start by buying your wax strips (I use Veet body wax strips in the dark pink package and it comes with wipe that moisturizes your skin when you are done)then make sure that you wash and dry that area really well... and here come the most important step.... make sure that you use BABY POWDER on the area to be waxed so that the strip doesn't stick to your skin!! Trust me a little bit makes a big difference... I thought this sounded crazy but it really helped in relieving pain from waxing. When you are finished use the wax strip to thoroughly remove any wax and moisturize and leave this on for a few hours. I alternate between lightly shaving with a sharp not dull razor and I still have good results. I also use dove moisturizing deodorants and I recommend shaving with a body wash that contains soy because this makes your hair grow in finer overtime. I accidently found this out when a relative left thier Aveeno body wash with soy at my house and I began shaving my legs with it over the summer and I couldn't figure out why my leg hairs were getting so sparse ... then I remembered that I had read about soy and how it could prevent hair growth and I had my aha moment... it really does work!! Hope this helps some of you.

The reason I used to suffer from dark underarms is because I scrubbed my armpits (a bit too hard sometimes) when showering. My sister found this product online (Whiterderm Skin Lightening Cream) and I tried it because of her insistence. It is effective...I can see a lightening already...

If you want to lighten your armpits? :
Take a shower everyday. . .especially during the summer & bathe in lukewarm water. Then, scrub your armpits with plain water. Use a nice-smelling body wash that is mosturizing. Scrub directly on the armpits. Wash off. Finish taking a shower. Wax. Take off exess stickies with GIGI "Wax off", wax removal for the skin. Use a pumice stone. Apply lemon juice from a lemon wedge on both underarms.
PS--DON'T use deoterant but instead anti-fungal spray, and if you use perfume don't spray on the underarms, but near them.

Ive been used baking soda for over a year and it has lighten my underarms by about 70%. Im no longer afraid to wear sleeveless tops!
I also use the baking soda as a odour neutralizer. It doesnt stop my from sweating but it doesnt smell anymore.
Plus its so cheap! RM2 for a 100GM cup which lasts about 2 months.
Do note however that it only works for baking soda. As in Bicarbonate of soda. And not baking powder.

I am a light skin latina and I have been having my UA dark since I started shaving and using deo. I search and google many products and ways to lighten my UA. I was always a bit iffy about trying products with the fear I would be disappointed. I didn't want to spend ridiciously high amount of dollars and at the end having no result. Well my wedding is coming around the corner and I just had to do something about it. Then I came across a video on youtube. It was a african american girl that had a before and after video of her UA after using this product called, Xtreme Brite. I slept on it and thought about it for a couple of days. Since the price wasn't so bad, I decided to go for it. I purchased TWO Xtreme Brite brightening gel (1.0 oz.) $11.00 a tube, and two soaps from that website. On June 26, 2011 I started the brightening gel and brightening soap on both UA. I began to see a change on my right UA on June 28, 2011. After that both my UA began to get lighter each day. I finished the first tube on July 27, 2011. At first I applied the gel morning and night for almost a month but then started to skip days and only apply either morning or night. I guess because I was very satisfied with the product and how light by UA were I wasn't trying to apply it everyday. But my UA are not completely light the way I want them so of course I am still applying the product. I am now applying the gel every night. Also, I completely trashed all my deo and purchase a organic deo (aluminum free etc.). I only use my deo if necessary. I tried not to shave but I still do because my UA are so sensitive with any other type of hair removals. As far as negative side effects, for me all I can say is that when I tried to epilate my UA, they both got red and bumps from the epilator or electric shaver, so when I applied the brightening gel it really burn alot. So I guess I can advice you to not apply the gel on your UA if you have bumps, rash etc. because it will burn. Also, if you decide to buy this tube, buy two. I am still on my second tube. I SWEAR by this product that it works. I am so happy that I don't have to worry about my UA on my special day. I have before and after pictures to prove it. I hope I help someone out there with the same promblem I had. You won't regret it. =)

hey guys.. have you ever heard about TAWAS? the most effective of all. It whitens, smoothens and stops growing hair on armpits. Its very cheap you can buy this now in Mercury or SM. Stone or powderized cost only 24 pesos.

I had an ugly armpits before it was like chicken skin and lots of dark spots because of abusive using different deodorants now I am happy with my armpits it has refined texture and smooth and fairly white. I let my 13 yr old daughter use it too and she happy of the results too. I use that too for my feet. I hope this helps.

hey guys!

here's an inexpensive and natural way of lightening your underarms.
i've tried honey waxing. it's really inexpensive. i only pay Php150 for it in just a small salon near our house. if you're a first-timer,it will be painful but don't u worry,it's tolerable. in my case, results were visible after the 2nd waxing; pores became tighter, the hair grew thinner, and the best thing about the honey wax is that it lightens your skin.

and guys for the deo, use the Nivea extra whitening - gentle care - cell repair with Licorice extracts. try first the 40ml,smallest bottle and check the results.

try going to salons and ask if they offer honey waxing. or you can also make ur own honey wax(just google it) and just do the waxing urself at home.

simple and inexpensive but this perfectly worked for me.:)

I took a long bath. I was using a metal cuticle pusher for my nails, but then decided to use it to scrape my underarm. A little bit of the skin came off so i scraped all over both underarms. When I got out of the shower and started to dry myself, A LOT of skin came off my underarm so i rubbed as hard as I could with my towel and removed as much skin as I could.

For more safe and much effective underarm skin whitening treatments, I suggest you should have let derma clinics and dermatologists handle it. Anyway it's not that expensive, there are clinics that offer discounts and promos around the metro. You can check underarm whitening promos here: http://www.dealstent.com/

1) papaya kojic soap (from amazon.com)
2) tend skin (do not use with papaya kojic soap)
3) black soap (from amazon.com)
4) wiping your underarm with astringent
5) using l'occitance men's deodorant or any natural deodorant
6) using a daily mud mask to improve skin quality
7) waxing or shaving less often
8) korean body scrub or any professional body scrub at a spa
9) sweating a lot without deodorant which encourages exfoliation (i.e. running outside yourself)
10) raw honey and fresh turmeric root mask (use daily)
11) using a metal object such as butter knife (the smooth side) to gently scrap off a little skin (you will see a small, brown film on the metal (don't scrape too hard) and when you are finished the shower, the rest of the skin will come off if you rub with a towel
